Independence

Got a call from a neighbor this morning. "Do you know," he said, "that your girls are out walking in the neighborhood?"

"Yes, I know that," I said. "Did they cross any streets?"

"I just saw them disappear down Lexington Street," he said.

"Okay," I said, to make him feel better, "I'll go out and intercept them."

This is so fine that I had to write an instantaneous poem. I call it

Intercepting happiness

Little two sisters
wandering out into the world
well equipped with their
stuffed animals
and smiles that could bridge
the width of the ocean
or conquer the neighborhood
whichever takes more joy -
hello!

this kind of lax parental supervision leads to p-guns and urine all over the neighbors' front steps.
